2006-06-28  Dear Friends

Good morning from stormy Zhaoqing. Lighting and thunder and pelting rain.  Similar to HK where No. 1 Typhoon  and the Heavy Rain Signals are up.  Dear Lord please protect everyone....
Academic year almost over....officially finishes July 7.  Because of high temperatures + storms + danger of walking to and from school twice a day, Ricci School  children these last two weeks are starting school at 7.30am, having a "brunch" break 10-10.30, then finishing the day at 1pm.  At Marco Polo both groups of children are attending the a.m. session....afternoons too many storms around 4pm....not so many storms a.m.???

World Cupd:  hope football will follow cricket and rugby league....and introduce off-field t.v. referee. In this IT age it's crazy that the whole world can see more clearly (thanks to replays) than an often obstructed referee.  Well done Australia.  Gutsy effort.  Many people here in China were right behind Australia.  Not sure if this romance will last when both teams are in the same qualifying section for the next WC!

The past week:

06-22 Assisi Center meal with Mandy and Mary - and see notes...

06-23 Ricci School: weekly staff lunch +  HK Mary, Joe & Nancy, A-Lin

06-24 Saturday 5pm at Marco Polo Center, with Betty & Mary

06-25 aHelp  volunteers with Ricci School students on way to Ricci Memorial Center for OME

06-26 Visit by HK Tak Sun teachers to Ricci School, Marco Polo, Bahkita, Area C, Mazenod

06-26 Visit to Marco Polo, Area C, Bahkita, Mazenod, Xavier by aHelp volunteers

06-27 San Mao Hospital - baby Fong born 9 hours ago

2006-06-21  Dear Friends

Good morning from warm and sunny Zhaoqing....fine before lunch....storm in afternoon....record rainfall the past month.  Academic year coming to a close....Senior Three students (Year 12) have finished exams and gone home, Junior Three (Year 9) are doing their public exam this week, then home. Most schools finish the year  officially on July7
CAS oral English classes have finished in primary (Damien & Monique now in Europe!), Shaun is continuing in kindergarten, Louis & Toni still have Go-Abroad classes, Marg & I have finished (secondary students now doing revision before final exams). Where has the semester/year gone?

I am most grateful to staff at Hostgator for help in setting up new account ("Baby" plan). Grateful also to staff at www.register.com for help in transferring DNS of the five websites to Hostgator.  Has been a big job uploading all files to new server. Like having a baby...

* Which is what has happened three times in the past week: three new babies from the poor areas, with families needing urgently needing our financial help....two caesarians & one induced....one of the caesars being for a breech angel, the other  for a horizontal angel  (+ new fact of life for me:  massaging the mother's ankles can help her deliver an overdue baby - thank you Toni!)

* Wednesday June 14: CAS staff Toni & Marg at hospital with Mrs Li & baby daughter (1/3)

* Thurs/Frid June 15-16: HK Marie & friends at Ricci Memorial Center; pm at Assisi; staff meal at Xavier; Mandy, Mrs Wong & baby (2/3)

* Mon/Tues June 19-20: Mrs Ho & new baby (3/3); welcome HK Mary - with Betty at Xavier

Good morning from hot and sticky and often still raining Zhaoqing.  Maybe not many people reading this until China8 back on line....however

C'mon Australia in World Cup - no China this time so my heart (often 50% China, 50% Australia) is now 100% Australia.  WC fever high in China...everyone watching.  Am using WC as talking point in class....helping students understand W = win, D = draw, L = loss  ....but when I got to GF (goals for) they thought it meant "girl friend" (a very common abbreviation in China)

The past two weeks (no diary last week because no server):

A study of over 100 passive homes showed they had a mean indoor temperature of 21.4 degrees during the bitter German winter. That’s 2.4 degrees warmer than the average British home.

2006-05-10  Dear Friends

Good afternoon from 30+ degree Zhaoqing.....just like Brisbane.....steaming hot in day, storm late afternoon or early night.
School is back after Labor Day Week holiday (May 1-7).  Remainder of this semester is downhill as academic year heads into final exams and Summer holidays

During the break:   Damien, Monique, Toni and Marg  had a great tour to Guilin,  following Louis' footsteps.  Photos on Toni's Home Page

Louis and I went to Hong Kong for OMI Annual retreat, joined for 3 days by Bill and Leon from Australia

On the way to HK  I stopped in Guangzou for lunch with Joe who now can climb 2 stairs at a time. Many thanks again to kind HK friends who are sponsoring Joe in his studies.  Many thanks also to all recent donors, in Australia & HK (especially Discovery Bay group in HK) for supporting our work for the poor

These past few days: visit to Zhaoqing poor areas by HK  PIME friends Joanna & Sandra
