Dear Friends

Hello again from Hong Kong where I'm still on hold  until air traffic controllers give the all clear for flight to Zhaoqing.
Please email me for black box record

Many thanks to HK friends for gatherings this past week.  Yesterday I also visited some special friends in Shek Pik & Ma Po Ping prisons (where I used to visit each week when working on Lantau Island).  Shared with some of them how I sort of joined their club for four hours earlier this month

Next Tuesday, Nov 25, I'm due to fly from Macau to Australia ....delayed Australian holiday...after usual check up on Gold Coast, hope to head South and maybe even West before returning to Macau/HK after a month or so.
My first time to visit Macau for some 15 years....hope to visit Ricci Center (have never been there) and grave of Robert Morrison .....and first time to fly from there to Australia....on Viva airlines  (less than half the price of other airlines).

Will try to update this diary each week as usual

As Barack Obama said a few hours ago: "We can"!

2008-10-29 Dear Friends

Good afternoon from Marco Polo Center in Zhaoqing. One door (education) keeps closing here; another (welfare) keeps opening.
Senior welfare officer yesterday at MP said that his department looks forward to working with China8 to help some of the hundreds of handicapped children in Zhaoqing who at present have no schooling available for them.

80 of our primary children have left MP, at arrangement by Education Office, for other schools - 54 of them to local San Mao school.
Met a San Mao School teacher last night while shopping....she has some of the former MP children....she said her other students were going to take up a collection of unwanted school uniforms and give them to the MP children....very kind.  Primary 1,2,3,4 MP children at local school all in their correct levels (i.e. P1 in P1 class etc)....not combined into two classes as reported in last week's diary.

Last week when the MP children registered at local school, one primary 4 MP boy was seen crying as he left the local school.
Why was he crying?  Because a non-MP boy at the school hit him.  Why did the boy hit him?  Because he, I'm not sure why, first hit the non-MP boy!
As Barak Obama said yesterday:
"We are one (week) from change but it won't be easy"

And....to be fair to Ed Office re their concerns about building standards/safety at MP.....it's been pointed out by a friend in Shanghai that Zhaoqing is on an earthquake fault and had a double earthquake when Ricci was here in 1584!

Photo reports of the past week: due to technical problems, some to do with computers, some of the supercalifragilisticexpialidocious variety, photo reports for the time being are in limbo. If you'd like limbo's location, please email me  john@china8.org

A few days ago I finished reading 1434.  A must for anyone interested in the history of China and history of the European Renaissance.

Also finished reading "Robert Morrison and the Birth of Chinese Protestantism" by Christopher Hancock. Tried to send this review to amazon.com but didn't succeed:
-------

What especially appealed to me was the frequent comparisons between Robert Morrison (RM) and Matteo Ricci (MR).  Two hundred years apart, each the first in his field, both faced the very same issues. Both had the same insight: "that the heart of China would be most effectively reached through the mind of China " (p. 244) - meaning that a respect for and understanding of Chinese culture/history and especially language were basic for missionary work in China .

Hancock also stresses Morrison's enlightened vision re avoidance of nationalism/denominationalism.

A vision that led to the establishment of the pioneering Anglo-Chinese College in Malacca, about which Morrison wrote: "May Malacca prove the Iona of these regions, and long resemble it in everything but its ruins" (p. 139)

A vision that stayed clear of Anglican/Catholic type clericalism that keeps church power/activity in the hands of an exclusive ordained group:

"As the world of Christians now is, I wonder how any good man can adhere to a system which unchurches thousands of the ablest ministers of Christ, and tens of thousands of the most devoted Christians" (p. 237)

Like Ricci, Morrison commended accommodation to Chinese culture, whereas

"his heirs inclined to confrontation; where Morrison immersed himself in China and Chinese, his more numerous successdors drifted towards cultural ghettosim and imperialist elitism; where Morrison built bridges, others demolished them; and, where they erected barricades, he trusted friendship and respect" (p. 6).

"He not only put China on Protestant maps, he modelled modern missionary methods" (p. 7)

Thank you Christopher Hancok for an absorbing work.

------

Morrison is buried in Macau....I hope to visit his grave some day

Any mistakes in English or Chinese?

November 1 - All Saints Day.
November 4 - Melbourne Cup Day.  Won't mention names of three Australians, one of them typing this, the others from Melbourne, who got mixed up and thought MC was yesterday. (My late father would turn in his grave to know that son forgot MC date).
But if there's a quadruped with a name something like "door closing", "door opening"...it might be worth getting a handle on

2008-10-22 Dear Friends

Good morning from the revolving door that is our Marco Polo Center in Zhaoqing:

Two days ago Education Office No. 1 man came again with new order: all our 106 primary students (except a dozen or so handicapped children) must go to local schools from tomorrow.   Primary 1 & 2 will be combined into a new primary one class at local Railway Primary School;  P3 & 4 will be combined into a new primary three class at same school. Primary 5 & 6 have to travel to a school much further away and join in their regular classes. All students to pay only Y206 (which Ed Office willing to pay if parents poor). China8's  work for school-less children has  shamed the EO into making places for the children....which in turn has not exactly made us flavor-of-the-month.

Our 70 kindergarten children  are in limbo....we are working on a solution (Ed Office has said "no more kindergarten at MP").

Main reasons for most of our troubles:  too many children, too much recent adverse publicity re Ed Office, Marco Polo landlord broke many rules (and fooled many people, especially myself) in putting up and renting buildings to us

Yet....ok for Marco Polo to have activities as usual on weekends and outside school hours.   DV Sat morning activities from Nov 1.
Clinic also ok to continue...as first aid center

And...yesterday... Welfare Office No. 1 man (for section dealing with handicapped children) came to Marco Polo....very friendly....has made kind offer to help us register as a special center for handicapped and disadvantaged children...in partnership with his department.....either on present site (if it can be re-zoned and divorced from landlord) or on new adjacent site

How do we feel?  Mixed feelings:
- happy for children finally to be accepted at local school for free (..has been a long battle...)
- concerned that local schools may not exactly welcome our children (..as happened three years ago when Ed Office forced them to take a group).....local schools + Ed Office arrangement once again a shotgun affair
- "Rachel weeping for her children"
- Ruth being proposed to by Boaz after a time of mourning

"One day at a time Dear Lord!"

2008-09-24  Dear Friends

Good afternoon  from Wet n' Wild  Zhaoqing.  Typhoon Hagupit (sic) hitting Hong Kong at moment is being felt here. "The worst typhoon for a decade".  Zhaoqing Education Office  ordered all schools to close today (first time I can remember such an order).  Kind official from EO phoned Marco Polo this morning with the news.  All schools are on a day at a time basis during typhoon...may have to close again tomorrow and Friday if necessary

Latest re Marco Polo:  negotiations are continuing, locally between Marco Polo staff and Education Office officials, and in Hong Kong among China8  friends, for continuation of Marco Polo.  Light appearing at end of tunnel DG.
As HK Peter said a week or so ago ....a lot of good will come out of this....future situation DV will be better than past

From an email today:  "By the way, xxxx  tells me there was a lot of support for you in the ZQ online forums, once rumours got out about a potential closure. I am told the local TV hotline was jammed. One guy wrote a three page essay in support of you – very unusual I am told. So looks like the community is behind you"

Reflection:  when you get into trouble, best time is a Thurs/Friday....then the word can get out Frid/Sat....then groups/congregations all over the world can lobby and storm Heaven for you on Sunday....to let the sun  shine on Monday.  Many many thanks to so many people in so many places around the world who prayed and lobbied on our behalf since Sep 11.
My own situation is ok again now DG (..from when I was  told on night of Sep 12 that I would not be allowed to re-enter China once my visa expired Sep 18,  until decision was reversed midday Sep15,  was like three days on death row)...........and negotiations are continuing to arrange a secure future for our Marco Polo Center
MP situation is quite complicated:  e.g.  many of our children are "no. 3" and "no.4"  and they are just not allowed to be educated until their parents have paid a penalty fee of some Y20,000
back in their home town.  Yet if they have no school, they're just going to roam the streets and be a nuisance to society (see  photo report 2008-09-15,16 above!)
Spot on text message:  2 Cor 4.8 (where  "all" sure means "all")

2008-09-10  Dear Friends

Good evening from Marco Polo Center in Zhaoqing on this World Teacher's Day....a very important day in China.  Wishing all teachers a happy day!

Premier Wen Jiabo's words for Teacher's Day:     (Full report)

Wen supported a  call for establishing parent-run schools . He urged teachers to love students, students to respect teachers, and society to give priority to education.

"Set students free, and not only allow them more hours to play, also  give them more time  for  sport, reflection and  understanding society," said the premier.

He urged teachers to be more creative  and make greater effort to obtain new knowledge to keep pace with the times.

At the end of his speech, Wen expressed  his profound gratitude, love and respect for teachers, especially those working in remote, rural and poverty-stricken areas

Also on this day....425 years ago....Matteo Ricci arrived in Zhaoqing

2008-09-03  Dear Friends

Good afternoon from Marco Polo Center in Zhaoqing on the third day of the new school year.
For all students, teachers, staff, parents - may this year be a good one...for which we say CHS!
Easy to tell it's the start of a new academic year: my home is next to one of the Marco Polo toilet blocks...and these days I have many times heard the lower kindergarten staff asking their children outside my window  "Are you a boy or a girl?"

With considerable sadness the move of our  primary 2-6 section  from Ricci School to Marco Polo was made last Friday (see report above).
Ricci was too small and lacked many basic facilities. The local education department recommended a move.
And yesterday HK Peter and I closed down the Ricci Memorial Center in town (and moved equipment to Marco Polo). Town center was losing money....catering for only a small group of not-poor students....the guard, Mr Tien, was urgently needed back in his home town in Guizhou for family reasons.  Peter has arranged for Saturday a.m. and evening classes to be held in future at newly renovated section of local church.
Thank you Lord for all the happy memories at both above centers. Please bless everyone who studied, worked at, visited, supported the two centers.

Primary 1 to 9 - free education for all children in China from Monday    ....not sure which China or what Monday is being referred to......here in Zhaoqing education fees for non-local children have gone up, not away.....maybe they will go up, up and away?
