(see update below)
"Simone" and her daughter "Judy".....both are mentally
handicapped and speech impaired (can say only a few words/sounds).....can't tell
anyone where they're from......have been sleeping on footpath near railway
station for more than a month.....in rags.....terrible smell. Last Monday night,
Oct 31, Paddy's family very kindly let/helped/made them have hot Dettol shower
in Paddy's home.....Rosa C provided change of clothes....Paddy's family let them
stay in home Oct 31 & Nov 1.....while we tried government
departments/agencies unsuccessfully for somewhere to stay. This morning one kind
government agency donated Y500 to help.....and this afternoon the plan is to
shift them to Marco Polo with someone to try to look after them (...not
easy...."Simone" refuses to use toilet.... just toilets on the
ground). But if they go back on the street hungry in the cold weather they will
....????
If any HK/overseas friends would like to support this work please let me know
2005-11-22: Today, after several weeks of searching and hoping....and thanks to lobbying of city and local station police....Simone was admitted to Zhaoqing Wong Kong Mental Hospital (which has some 50 female and 100 male inmates).
2005-11-24:
Today, thanks again to lobbying of local police station officers, Judy was
admitted to Zhaoqing Welfare House (right opposite Wong Kong Mental
Hospital). No fee for Judy.....and when Rosa C, Paddy's mother and I went
to see Simone after admitting Judy, Wong Kong Hospital kindly said "No
further fee required for Simone". DG!
And may Judy soon find a foster home....and may Simone soon find a sheltered
workshop.
We will continue to visit Simone and Judy....and Rosa C hopes to arrange for
Judy to have eye specialist care in Guangzhou (...Judy is seriously visually
impaired).
With one final piece of good news: Simone is not expecting a baby! Her
swollen tummy is possibly the result of malnutrition
