In September, 2001 a small organisation China 8 was set up in Zhaoqing, Guangdong Province, China by an Australian catholic priest, John Wotherspoon, to work with migrant worker families in Zhaoqing. In seven years China 8 has grown from a simple gesture by John to help one migrant family to an organisation with three centres helping hundreds of people.
China8 helps migrant workers in the city of Zhaoqing:
- providing free education for school-less children
- assisting health care for poor families
- enabling the local community and new arrivals to work together for a harmonious society
In the slum areas of Zhaoqing, China8 has three centers:
Bahkita Center - pre-school, activity center, study center, holiday activities
Marco Polo Center - activity center, special learning center, family clinic, handicapped center, orphanage
Mazenod Center - activity center
